How to send WhatsApp broadcasts without getting your number blocked

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Only message people who agreed to hear from you, and make opting out easy.
  • Broadcasts use approved templates; Meta charges per template message.
  • If many people block or report you, Meta lowers your quality rating and can limit your number.
  • Smaller, targeted broadcasts by tag beat one big blast to everyone.

Short answer: broadcast only to contacts who opted in, use relevant approved templates, send to targeted tags rather than everyone, and watch your number’s quality rating in the Numbers page. People blocking or reporting your messages is what gets numbers limited.

How WhatsApp decides if you are spamming

Meta gives every business number a quality rating based on how people respond to your messages, especially blocks and reports. Each number also has a messaging limit: how many people you can start conversations with in a day. Numbers with good quality and steady sending get higher limits; numbers with low quality can be limited.

In Upgrow Connect, the Numbers page shows each number’s display name status, quality rating and messaging limit as Meta reports them.

Step 1: Get real opt-in

Opt-in means the person agreed to get messages from you on WhatsApp. Good places to collect it: your lead form, the first chat ("Can we send you offers on WhatsApp?"), at billing, or on your website. Record it on the contact. Upgrow Connect shows each contact as Subscribed, Not confirmed or Opted out.

Step 2: Use the right template

TEMPLATE TYPEUSE IT FOR
MarketingOffers, new batches, events, festival greetings with an offer.
UtilityUpdates the customer expects: booking confirmations, reminders, payment updates.
AuthenticationOne-time login codes (OTP).

Write templates the way you would speak to a customer: short, specific and useful. Templates are reviewed by Meta before you can use them.

Step 3: Send to tags, not to everyone

A broadcast about a Kochi open house should go to the "Kochi" tag, not your whole list. Relevance is the best protection against blocks. It also costs less, because Meta charges per template message delivered.

Pre-send checklist

  • Everyone on the list opted in, and opted-out contacts are excluded.
  • The message is relevant to this tag, not a generic blast.
  • It says who you are in the first line.
  • There is a clear next step: a button or a reply.
  • You are not sending the same offer again within a few days.
  • Your number’s quality rating is not already low.

What to do after sending

Check delivered and read counts. If read rates fall or blocks rise, send less often and to smaller, more interested groups. Reply quickly to people who respond: replies within 24 hours are free and are where sales happen.

Frequently asked questions

Only if they agreed to get messages from you on WhatsApp, for example through a form. Messaging people who did not opt in leads to blocks and can limit your number.
